- Storyboxes for Branch Libraries
Project title: Storyboxes for Branch Libraries
Organisation: State Library of Tasmania
Amount funded: $4,743.20
The State Library of Tasmania’s pre-school Storytime program offers fun filled craft sessions, stories, rhymes and songs to assist the development of literacy skills of children in the early years. In 2007-2008 the State Library identified the need to enhance the delivery the Storytime program by developing Storyboxes.
Fourteen Storyboxes were funded, each focussing on different storytelling themes. Each Storybox contained books with suggestions for activities and storytelling, as well as craft materials.
Key objectives of the Storybox project were to:
- provide children and parents across the state with greater access to the Storytime program;
- aid the development of pre-literacy skills amongst the target age group; and
- increase the number of volunteers involved in delivering the Storytime program.
Libraries in Cygnet, Geeveston, HuonLINC, Orford, Sorell, Longford, Queenstown, Ravenswood, St Helens, Smithton, Ulverstone and Westbury were allocated a Storybox that will be rotated each month. Two additional Storyboxes will be rotated to libraries in the North and South that do not have a regular Storytime program.
The State Library has established a number of partnerships with playgroups and child care centres to deliver literacy programs for children and community volunteers provide valuable assistance in the delivery of this Storybox program.
The State Library has committed to maintaining the Storybox resources to ensure that this project has ongoing benefits to pre-school age children.
