Professor Carmichael is the Dean of the Faculty of Health Science - School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania. Professor Carmichael’s current positions also include:
- Professor - Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Tasmania (1992 -);
- State Adviser in Child Health Services - Department of Health and Human Services, Tasmania (1992 -);
- Senior Consultant Paediatrician - Department of Paediatrics, Royal Hobart Hospital (1992 -); and
- Emeritus Paediatrician - Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (1992 -).
Professor Carmichael is a also a member of a number of national bodies with a focus on child health, including:
- Public Health Association of Australia;
- Australian and New Zealand Association for Medical Education;
- Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Fellow);
- Division of Paediatrics & Child Health, RACP;
- Chapter of Community Child Health;
- Australian Epidemiological Association;
- Royal Society of Medicine (Fellow);
- Australian Medical Association (Tasmanian Branch); and
- International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect.
