Professor Carmichael is the Dean of the Faculty of Health Science - School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania. Professor Carmichael’s current positions also include:

  • Professor - Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Tasmania (1992 -);
  • State Adviser in Child Health Services - Department of Health and Human Services, Tasmania (1992 -);
  • Senior Consultant Paediatrician - Department of Paediatrics, Royal Hobart Hospital (1992 -); and
  • Emeritus Paediatrician - Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (1992 -).

Professor Carmichael is a also a member of a number of national bodies with a focus on child health, including:

  • Public Health Association of Australia;
  • Australian and New Zealand Association for Medical Education;
  • Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Fellow);
  • Division of Paediatrics & Child Health, RACP;
  • Chapter of Community Child Health;
  • Australian Epidemiological Association;
