Mr Paul Mason has over 27 years experience working in all areas of family law both State and Federal including complex parenting and child protection cases, both as a solicitor and barrister across three states, and since 2004 in Tasmania.  In 1987 he was the founding Secretary of the Far North Coast Family Law Practioners Association (FLPA) and in 2005-2007 was a Committee member of the FLPA of Tasmania.  He has represented children in over 200 cases as child representative and independent children's lawyer.  He is a qualified mediator and arbitrator.

He is deeply committed to the human rights of children and a strong believer in their capacity to make valuable contributions to all decisions affecting their welfare and development.

In April 2007, the Minister for Health and Human Services, the Hon Lara Giddings, appointed Mr Mason as the third Tasmanian Commissioner for Children under the Children Young Persons And Their Families Act 1997.
